Student renting

Student renting checklist

Student rentals move fast, but rushing the postcode can make the whole year harder. Use this checklist before you book a viewing or agree to join a house.

Check the journey you will repeat most

Do not only check distance from campus. Check the route you will actually use for lectures, library time, part-time work, placements and late journeys home.

  • Walking time in daylight and after dark.
  • Bus, tram, train or cycle options when weather is bad.
  • Cost of the journey across a full term, not just one trip.

Run the rental postcode before the viewing

Use Map Intelligence for a quick postcode read. It will not tell you whether a house is right, but it can flag route caution, daily environment, green cover and the bits that still need checking.

  • Check the exact postcode if the listing gives it.
  • If only an outward postcode is shown, treat the result as wider postcode evidence.
  • Write down questions for the agent, landlord or housemates before travelling.

Agree housemate hard-nos early

A house share can fail because people quietly assumed different things. Before committing, agree what everyone needs around bills, heating, guests, cleaning, noise and study space.

Verify costs and contract details

Ask what is included, what is separate, how deposits are protected, whether guarantors are needed and who handles repairs. Do this before pressure builds after the viewing.

Use postcode evidence carefully

No dataset can guarantee safety or suitability. Treat NeighbourFit as a context layer, then verify the street, building and tenancy documents yourself or with someone you trust.
